Students will engage in a writing process, with attention to organization, focus, quality of ideas, and a purpose. Students will practice such writing process steps as brainstorming, prewriting, drafting, revising and publishing. Also, grammar and punctuation will be studied in context of a wide breadth of literary sources. Students will read a variety of high-quality, traditional, classical and contemporary literary works specific to America, as well as significant works from other countries.

Students will review some of the 6th grade curriculum, adding practice in formatting word-processed documents to present information in an organized, readable format, integrating graphics, illustrations, and bulleting, as needed. Also, they will read from and respond to a variety of fiction, poetic, and nonfiction texts of increasing complexity for personal enjoyment. Adding to their solid foundation in process writing, students will create informative, expressive and persuasive composition including: poetry, stories and essays.

Students will write frequently in a variety of forms, including, but not limited to forms mentioned above plus letters, directions and research reports. In further development of textual study, students will respond to literature using ideas and details from the text to support reactions and make literary connections. Eighth- graders will build on their knowledge of grammar and other knowledge of language to acquire, understand, and use new vocabulary through explicit and indirect vocabulary instruction and independent reading.

This course emphasizes continued development of reading, writing, and oral communication. Students will read a wide variety of literature, including drama, novels, short stories, poetry and nonfiction. Studens are expected to become more effective writers and will use critical thinking and technology to communicate ideas of writers, and ideas of their own. One goal of this course is to help students improve their reading and writing skills. This course fulfills curriculum requirements and meets the Minnesota graduation standards for 9th grade.

This course takes a practical approach to skills in reading and comprehension, writing/editing, communicating/speaking effectively, and critical thinking. The course also covers the main terms, genres, and themes of literature. Writing experiences include paragraphs, a book report, and a research paper. Students will review basic grammar as well as practice their speaking skills. This course fulfills curriculum requirements and meets the Minnesota graduation standards for 10th grade.

This course emphasizes reading a survey of World Literature in the context of analytical and creative activities designed to provide students with an overview of classic literature from around the world and with an opportunity to apply and test their emerging critical reading and writing skills in the context of that literature. Students will review basic grammar as well as practice their speaking skills. This course fulfills curriculum requirements and meets the Minnesota graduation standards for 11th grade.

Advanced Placement English is a college level course offered to seniors selected on the basis of outstanding competence and motivation who are interested in earning college units on the basis of demonstrated college level achievement. Students will develop skills and study habits that will be vital in the college curriculum. Focus of this class is on analyzing problems effectively, improving writing skills, and thinking independently. Performance on a three-hour examination in May, will determine eligibility for college units.

World Literature is a full-year course, which covers a number of well-known world classics of literacy and historical significance. This class provides an opportunity to read, discuss and critique literature from around the world. An important goal of the class is to promote an understanding of the works in their cultural/historical contexts and of the enduring human values which unite the different literary traditions. Students will explore common themes throughout the different cultures including roles of women, change and revolution, justice, war and peace. Through the close reading of novels, plays, poetry, short stories, essays and films, students will learn about a variety of cultures from the perspectives of internationally recognized authors and film makers. Students will read critically and write regularly. This course fulfills curriculum requirements and meets the Minnesota graduation standards for 12th grade.

This course emphasizes interpersonal speaking skills and the fundamentals of formal presentation which includes information, demonstration, persuasion, and entertainment. It includes the techniques of group communication and skills of effective listening. This course also covers a theatre arts survey of drama as literature from the Greeks to the Contemporaries, as well as basic aspects of acting, such as voice, movement and character interpretation.
